Learn essential beginner sewing skills while creating a stylish, drapey asymmetrical skirt you’ll be proud to take home.

We’ll skip the scissors and hemming by using fabric tearing for a raw, artistic edge, and the leftover side strips will become the waist casing—nothing wasted (or should we say, “waist not”?). You’ll practice straight stitches, learn basic garment construction, create elastic and drawstring casings, and even try a bit of zig-zag couching for trim.

All of these techniques can be applied to more traditional clothing too. And what better place to debut your one-of-a-kind creation than The Original Sewing and Quilting Expo?

Students Bring Your Own Fabric

In the Janome Sewing sponsored by Gall Sewing and Vac
  • Student Maximum: 20
  • Category(ies): Garment Style and Design, Fashion Fit and Construction, Sewing Fundamentals
  • Experience Level:
    • All Skills Welcome
  • Advance Prep:
    • Wash and dry your fabric
  • Supply List:

    Fabric required:

    • Bring 2 yards (3 if you want a long skirt, or for the additional top) of 54 inch- 60 inch wide (or you can use 45 inch width, if you only want one drape) of a medium weight fabric with Great Drape, such as Tencel, Sateen, Rayon twill, Hemp, and easy to work with (as in, not too slippery) and not crisp, etc...and it should tear without messing up the grain, so probably not Damasks, or weaves with stronger threads woven in. Tear off the selvage (the tightly woven edge) to see if it tears without pulling threads, or distorting the fabric. if it does, you don't want that fabric for this project.

    Notions required:

    • Basic sewing supplies including: needles and matching threads (1 spool), sewing scissors, thread scissors, pencils ( I like a #9 mechanical pencil ) and eraser, pins in your pin cushion, measuring tape
  • Completion Level:
    • Most will complete 100% of the project
