Debra Bohn
Clemmons, NC
Husqvarna Viking Independent Educator
Over 30 years ago, Debra started sewing when her young daughter wanted a Cabbage Patch Doll for Christmas. You couldn’t buy one anywhere so Mrs. Claus got busy and took a class on how to make the doll. It was love at first project! While she is accomplished in many sewing techniques, her obsession is embroidery and embroidery software. She has attended many training sessions through the years and is familiar with most brands.

Debra has been published in Creative Machine Embroidery and Through the Needle and is a contributor to Keeping the World Sewing and VSM Software Club. Debra’s classes are designed to help embroiderers take the mystery, and misery, out of embroidering. She shares her sewing successes and her failures, with samples and anecdotes, with her students, who are glad to know they are not the only one who makes mistakes. Debra’s philosophy for teaching is that her students have fun while learning and she tries to help them realize that there is potential in all of them. www.sewpracticaldebra.com

Debbie Maddy
Graham, TX
Calico Cottage Quilt Designs
Debbie started sewing when she was nine years old and has been quilting since the early 80s. In 2002 she started Calico Carriage Quilt Designs and has self published 28 patterns and 6 books. She designs patterns for beginning quilters that even the experienced quilters enjoy. All the patterns are based on old traditional quilt blocks that were made with diamonds and therefore too difficult for many quilters to attempt. She redesigned the blocks using half square triangles and no diamonds, no Y seams and no bias edges. She does not use foundation or paper piecing. Many of her patterns have been made by first time quilters. The technique is simple but the results look complicated. Experienced quilters like the line because they can complete quilts in much less time than in the past. She now teaches nationallyand continues to design and create new quilts. www.calicocarriage.com

Stacy Michell

Marietta, GA
Shades Textiles

In 1986, Stacy Michell started a business venture called “Shades Textiles”. After visiting several large quilt shows, she was inspired to explore the options of hand dyed textiles in the quilting marketplace. Within her first couple of years in business Stacy started exhibiting at as many as 18 quilt shows a year. Stacy met a Japanese Textile artist named Akio Kawamoto and quickly entered the export market place. Today much of her fabric is sold in Japan and there are several very large private collections of her cloth there. Stacy’s Cloth has also been featured in many Japanese how-to-quilt books written by Kathy Nakajima.

Many of her Japanese customers started to make Hawaiian Style quilts using her colorful hand-dyed cloth. These fabric choices broke the old design rule of Hawaiian quilts being made from 2 solid colors of cloth. This artistic movement inspired Stacy and her associate Toshiko Hashimoto to create a large line of appliqué designs inspired by Hawaiian quilts on any design theme, but Hawaiian. Hawaiian style quilts have a distinctive technique, where the cloth is folded and cut, kind of like making a paper snow flake, but the designs are of a Hawaiian theme. “All-Around Appliqué Designs” from Shades Textiles have over 100 block designs with diverse themes from cats & dogs to Christmas trees and Jack ‘O Lanterns or sports like surfing or golf. All of the creative energy flowing around her studio with the addition of the appliqué patterns has also created many new dyed fabric techniques and colors. www.shadestextiles.com

Kim Montagnese
Amherst, OH
AhHa!
Kim began playing with fabric and sneaking the use of her mom's "forbidden" sewing machine in the early 70s. Long before great fabric or creative classes were available, Kim was forced to make it up as she went along. She came to love the look of hand appliqué, but lacked the patience. Fortunately, a series of mistakes led to the method she uses today. Students love the "no curved piecing"," inside out" and "quilts that keep on giving" concept of quilting. Kim loves the AhHa! moment students experience and has felt privileged to share the fun for the past 15 years.

Kim's quilts have won many awards throughout Ohio, been displayed at the Denver International Airport as well as private collections across the country and also featured in Art Quilt Calender. She is a member of Lorain County Piecemakers, Studio Art Quilters Association and Firelands Association for the Visual Arts, and is proudly associated with Pear Tree Gallery and Ginko Gallery.

Mavis Rosbach
Jesup, GA
Quiltbird Studio

Mavis started sewing at age 8 and has learned and enjoyed other handcrafts throughout her life. She started quilting with her sister 23 years ago on an anniversary quilt for their parents. Bit by the quilt bug, she took a beginner class from the local college and made several other quilts; then life and raising two children with her husband Jeff consumed her time. After moving from the west coast to a small town in Georgia, her interest in quilting was renewed when she enrolled in an appliqué class. In 1999 Mavis was approached to teach local quilting classes and soon after organized the local quilt guild. She started writing booklets for and leading ‘all-nighter’ quilting and other specialty classes locally and in the surrounding areas. In the fall of 2001 she purchased her Gammill Long Arm, created Quiltbird Studio and shortly thereafter began quilting professionally. Recently she has begun designing quilting patterns, motifs and long arm pantographs. Still enjoying the personal aspect of quilting, Mavis loves teaching and talking quilts with others! www.quiltbirdstudio.com

Debra Youngs
Schoolcraft, MI
Art U Wear

Debra Beadles Youngs, founder of Art U Wear, is a quilt and clothing designer living in Schoolcraft, Michigan. Debra began sewing at age 10 and soon began to develop her own patterns. Two years later, at age 12, her grandmother, Mary Beadles, taught her to quilt. Quilting soon became her passion. After 17 years at home to raise her children, she discovered that she had accumulated over 30 queen-size bed quilts, several twins, and hundreds of baby quilts.
Art U Wear is a by-product of her love of quilts and the fact that the sleeves are too short on most “store bought” jackets. Debra lectures and teaches her jacket techniques at workshops across the country. Her work has been published in Wearable Art 1900-2000, a Schiffer Book for Designers and Collectors. Her designs have been featured in Bernina Magazine and Love of Quilting magazine. Debra has also appeared on two PBS quilting shows. She remains active in her local quilt guild and is currently enlarging her studio to house a sewing school for children. www.artuwear.net
