While creating this beautiful sunflower wall hanging, we will cover some basic fusible applique tips and techniques, stitching and quilting ideas, and explore the option of adding the 3rd dimension to your projects using the fun product Terial Magic. Fabric kits are available, and students can choose between doing standard raw edge applique or including the treated fabric for stand-up flower petals. *Terial Magic treated fabric needed for 3D petals. Brighten up your wall while you learn how easy it is to include 3-D petals in your quilted wall art all while you create your own garden of fabric flowers!

Advance Prep: In order to build your flower and be ready for stitching, students should trace and label your pattern pieces on fusible web, fuse to the corresponding fabric color, cut out and organize your pieces for your flowers and leaves prior to class.

If you are new to applique, don’t feel comfortable doing this step on your own, and/or cannot achieve this by day of class, I will cover these steps at the top of class and you can do this work during class instead. Note that you will most likely not be able to build your flower in preparation for stitching during the live class. But you will be able to follow the instructions upon re-watching. Students wishing to work on stitching/quilting during class should have their machine in an area where they can view class and listen to instruction as they work.

You will also need:

Pattern and pre-ordered fabric kit (see above)

Backing Fabric

Fusible web (suggested: either Steam a seam 2 lite or Pellon wonder under)

Stabilizer (suggested: totally stable)

Batting (suggested: Thermolam Plus (non-fusible)

Applique pressing sheet (or parchment paper)

Sharp fabric scissors, Felt tip pen (sharpie) fine tip

Sharp small fabric scissors (suggested fiskers or perfect scissors)

Iron and pressing satation (large enough pressing station with their pressing sheet, and a hot iron for fusing pieces.)

Darning or Free Motion foot

Thread (Top threads should match or compliment the tones of your flower fabric)

Bobbin threads (can match or you can use a lightweight thread in a neutral tone close to the value of your top threads)

Needles: Please have new needles for your project. I suggest topstitch Microtex sharp Quilting or Embroidery Needles. Size of needle depends on the size of your thread you will be using,

FOR OPTIONAL 3-D Petals: Freezer Paper, Terial Magic, Glue stick (does not have to be made for fabric), Clear Lightweight vinyl
