Learn easy methods to making soft three-dimensional projects including free motion sewing, sewing successfully with metallic thread, and adding optional machine embroidered lettering. You will truly learn “sew” much more in this class as you have fun making a fabric basket to display your favorite threads! Michelle will share her basket collection with you, and you will be inspired to make a collection of your own with your newfound skills! Bring your own fabric; see supply list for details.

  • Prerequisite: Be familiar with how to create an embroidery design using built-in lettering.
  • Advance Prep:
    Be sure to purchase your kit at least three weeks prior to class using the link in the Student Supply List.

     

    After you receive your kit apply Clover Wonder Fuse to the wrong side of the coordinating quilting cotton. Cut a 12 x 12-inch piece of Sulky Fuse ’n Stitch stabilizer. Wind a bobbin with Sulky Bobbin Thread. Wind half a bobbin with 40 wt. Rayon to match the thread being used for the edge of the basket. Insert the bobbin wound with bobbin thread. Insert a new 90/14 Topstitch Needle. Download, print, cut and assemble the pattern Have the non-stick appliqué pressing sheet, iron and ironing surface ready for the first step.

    You will also need: 1-2 spools of 40 wt. rayon thread to coordinate with your fabric (one for the wording Thread Basket and the same or coordinating color to finish off the raw edge of the basket); bobbin thread; fabric marking tool that will show up on your selected fabric; FriXion pen; general sewing supplies; scissors (to cut through layers of fabric, batting and stabilizer); iron; pressing surface; non-stick applique pressing sheet; sewing machine in good working order; embroidery unit for your machine; 5 x 7-inch embroidery hoop; sewing machine manual; Free Motion Spring Loaded foot; Open Toe Applique foot.

     

    Fabric requirements: Two 12 x 12-inch pieces of coordinating quilting cotton fabric (recommend no dark colors) One 12 x 12-inch piece of cotton batting.

  • Completion Level: Complete the entire basket.
