One can never have enough bags! And this Messenger Bag, featured in the Autumn 2019 issue of Classic Sewing magazine, is the perfect size, measuring approximately 11 x 13 x 4 inches when constructed. One of the techniques that might appear to be hard, serging a strip of fabric to three sides of a rectangle to create the sides and bottom of the bag, is actually pretty simple when you know the magic tricks! This bag’s long strap allows for cross-body wearing, and the handy double interior pocket is definitely a plus! A plethora of serger techniques can be found on this project—grid quilting, creating and applying piping, inserting a zipper, and serging a gusset around corners, along with great constructing-by-serger tips. So, get that serger threaded up for a few hours of fun! Note: The grid quilting shown in the sample requires a serger capable of doing a chain or cover stitch. However, you CAN do this class with a 4-thread serger. You will instead do your grid quilting by sewing machine using a straight stitch or a decorative stitch. Or, you can simply leave the flap plain. Bring your own fabric; see supply list for details.
