When your pattern fits, sewing is a dream! Bring your specially prepared mock-up and the pattern from which it came and receive expert help in finding the fit you desire. Discover how to make tweaks to your own and others’ fabric mock-ups; when satisfactory fit has been achieved, learn to apply the adjustments to the pattern. In the end, you’ll be able to cut, sew and . . . . simply wear and enjoy your new clothes. Information and directions for pre-class homework, including how to take proper measurements, make initial pattern adjustments and correctly prepare your mock-up for class will be mailed to you.
  • Student Maximum: 16 (0 seats left)
  • Category(ies): More the Day Before, Experienced Sewers, Fashion Sewing, Fashion Fit and Construction
  • Experience Level: Must have some garment sewing experience.
  • Prerequisite: Must have a properly prepared mock-up and its pattern ready to work with in class.
  • Advance Prep:
Cynthia strongly recommends that you allow ample time to prepare for class. It is a multi-step process, and the more ‘ready’ you are, the more you will accomplish with her on Wednesday.

First, select a pattern that gives you the opportunity to deal with your fitting challenges. This is often a pattern with princess seamlines which originate at the shoulder. You will receive a book (which will arrive in the mail separately from your class ticket) that will instruct you on how to take your measurements, apply them to the pattern and make the initial alterations. This is to be done before you cut your mock-up.

Cynthia is available by email (cynthiaguffey@juno.com), to answer any and all questions including pattern choice and additions for ease.

    To Prepare the Mock-Up:
    1. Select fabric that mocks the weight and drape of the fashion fabric you will later use.
    2. Mark the center front, center back, and waistline with an ink pen on the outside of the mock up.
    3. Application of facings is not necessary. Instead, stitch a line with the grain 3/4 inch from the cut edge where a facing would have been applied.
    4. If a collar is part of the design, apply only one layer.
    5. Set in both sleeves.
    6. Pin shoulder pads in place.
    7. If mocking a skirt, apply the waistband or facings.
    8. Sew with a stitch length of 3.0mm.

Please note that complimentary lunch is included. You will receive a voucher in class to use at the concessions counter.
  • Supply List: Please arrive prepared to try on your mock-up in class. Bring your altered paper pattern (Cynthia will check your alterations before fitting the mock up), 1/2 yard of fabric used for the mock up, large and small pairs of fabric cutting scissors, paper cutting scissors, tissue for adjusting pattern, ink pen and paper for notes, straight pins, masking tape (not painters' tape), calculator, rulers, tape measure, seam ripper (if you use one), additional styles of shoulder pads if in question.
  • Completion Level: Students will work at their own pace, completing adjustments on the mock-up and transferring them back to the paper pattern on at least one garment.
