In this hands-on workshop, students will explore the art of sashiko stitching—a traditional Japanese embroidery technique rooted in strength, beauty, and sustainability—and remix it into modern denim fashion. Participants will first learn and practice several classic sashiko patterns, then design and apply visible mending and decorative stitching directly onto a denim jacket. Bring a Levi-style or thrifted denim jacket and leave with a bold, customized piece that fuses Japanese heritage with your personal style.

  • Understand the history and cultural context of sashiko stitching
  • Learn how to stitch 3–5 traditional sashiko patterns by hand • Practice layout and design placement on garments
  • Apply visible mending and embellishment techniques to a jacket
  • Create a one-of-a-kind jacket that merges old-world craftsmanship with modern street style
