Ursuline College Fashion Show:

Metallic in Celebration
Apparel, it has been said, is a vehicle for personal expression, and has long reflected the political, economic, and spirit of the times of society during a particular period. This year Ursuline College students, from beginners to the most advanced, have put together a glorious fashion show, using as their inspiration garments from the 1970s and 1980s, when gold and silver metallic fashions were popular. See this spectacular fashion show of original and non-traditional designs at the Expo!

The Inspiration:
Ursuline Historic Costume Study Collection contains almost 4,000 twenty-first century pieces, including designs from Bob Mackie, Adele Simpson, Bill Blass, Pauline Trigeré, Adolfo, Escada, Christian Dior, Pamela Dennis and Oscar de la Renta, to name a few. This year, inspiration for the fashion show came from the gold and silver metallic fashions which were popular in the 1970s and 1980s. These elegant metallic fashions can be found in Collections and Museums around the world. Each thread is wrapped in gold or silver before it is woven into lamé fabric, then cut to design--thus creating the beautiful fashion you will see in on the runway. Metallic can be mixed with lace and other fabrics to create beautiful fashion.

The Backstory:
Ursuline College fashion program students utilized the skills they learned from coursework in apparel construction, draping, and flat pattern classes to create their outfits seen on the runway. Both merchandising and fashion design students start their studies with courses in apparel construction, which are taught by Mrs. Jennifer Knaus, Instructor. Design majors continue in Mrs. Knaus’s patternmaking fundamentals, draping, and flat pattern courses…all while learning to design, fit and construct garments to a customer. In this show, you will see work from the beginner sewer who has altered commercial patterns to the advanced students who have draped their original design on a Wolf dress form. New this year, at Ursuline College, is the course in 3-D printing. Ms. Anne-Marie Gurko, Adjunct Faculty teaches how to create accessories on the 3-D printer and fashion show production.
