Shadow work is not the first thing most people think of when they think about decorative stitching with sergers. However, the thread coverage of the loopers and the consistency of the stitch width make them perfect for it for this type of embellishment. We will take a look at two types of serger stitches that can be used for shadow work – cover stitches and flatlock stitches – which makes almost any serger capable of this beautiful decorative technique. Mix your serger with a well-starched lightweight fabric, such as batiste, organza or handkerchief linen and you have an instant heirloom!

  • Advance Prep:

    1. Pattern: (found by clicking "File Link" in your Order Confirmation email)

Print the pattern and tape together according to the directions found on page 1a.

    2. Cutting and Fabric Prep:

    a. From the 12 inch square of white batiste, cut three 4x12 inch strips. Starch and press two of these strips until they are the consistency of lightweight paper. See step 1 under SHADOW WORK PANEL in the Bib instructions for different techniques to accomplish this.

    b. From the 12 x 21 inch rectangle of colored batiste, cut one 12 inch square and two 12 x 4-1/2 inch strips. Cut one bib from the 12 inch square.

    c. Cut one bib from the 12 inch square of batting.

    3. Serger Set-Up:

Read the first two pages of the Shadow Work Bib instruction download. This will give you information about the thread variations that can be used to achieve different shadow work results. Determine which stitch (flatlock, narrow cover stitch or wide cover stitch) that you will use. Determine which threads you will use. Set up the serger accordingly. Follow step 2 under SHADOW WORK PANEL in the Bib instructions to test your chosen stitch/threads to ensure that you like it. Adjust as desired.

    4. Sewing Machine Set-Up

    a. If you will be using decorative stitches (as shown on the flatlocked bib), thread the machine with 40wt. embroidery thread in the needle and embroidery bobbin thread in the bobbin.

    b. If you will not be using decorative stitches, thread the machine with white construction or lightweight thread
