Can you believe it is possible to make a Hunter Star without cutting diamonds – using just strip piecing? Well, this workshop explores how to do just that! You will be sewing strips to make your diamonds, and will be able to trim down your final blocks to the perfect size. And ….the Rapid Fire Hunter Star tool allows you to make 4 different size blocks. Amazing!

Bring your own fabric; see supply list for details.

  • Student Maximum: 20
  • Category(ies): Quiltmaking, Piecing Techniques
  • Experience Level: Advanced beginner
  • Advance Prep: Starch your fabrics before cutting. Recommend Mary Ellen’s Best Press or similar.

Cut 1/2 yard of dark fabric and 1/2 yard of light fabric for background as follows:
    • Cut 2 strips, 6 inch X WOF
    • Subcut these strips into (8) 6 inch squares. You will have 8 dark and 8 light 6 inch squares
    • Cut 2 strips 1 3/4 inch X WOF. You will have 2 dark and 2 light strips.

Cut 1/2 yard of accent fabric into 6 strips, 2 1/4 inch X WOF (these will become stars/diamonds)

These will form the center of your quilt (24 x 24 inches).

  • Supply List:

Paper scissors, fabric scissors, small scissors or snips, straight pins, highlighter, mechanical pencil, seam ripper and Mary Ellen’s Best Press or similar to be used on your fabric BEFORE you cut your strips (I do not recommend regular spray starch as it can attract silverfish).

Not required, but highly recommended: Stiletto, InvisiGRIP by Omni-Grid and Camera (for Connie's display boards)

    Fabric Requirements:
We will be using the 3 Color Basic Recipe in this workshop - it is very important that your fabric choices have a high contrast. If you choose all your fabrics of the same value, your blocks will look like a scrambled mess. If you are not sure if your fabrics have good contrast, take a picture in gray scale, copy it in black and white on your printer or use your value finder tool. This will allow you to see if you truly have 3 different values (light, medium, dark). PLEASE starch your fabrics before cutting. You will be much happier with the results. Your fabrics MUST be cut BEFORE you come to class - see Advance Prep for cutting requirements.
    • 1/2 yard each dark (background), light (background) and accent (stars/diamonds) fabrics. These will form the center of your quilt (24 x 24 inches). See Advance Prep for cutting directions. You will need 1/2 - 3/4 yard of two or more fabrics for borders to complete your quilt after class.
  • Completion Level: The student will complete some units and understand completion steps.
